The strike is over! I for one can't wait to get back to class. We have so many amazing things to do this year, I can't wait to get the ball rolling. It has been a roller-coaster of a week with rallies and picketing and planning and waiting... Politics aside, we have a lot of work to do in Drama and I'm excited to be getting back to it.
Quick note: I met some truly wonderful people on the picket line that are energized to make Ravenswood Elementary even better. Stay tuned for more news on brand new curtains for the stage, and a new playground design that could potentially include a small outdoor amphitheater. I have grand visions of performances of Greek plays in the future.
In other news, it has been great working with all of the teachers through these troubling times. In the pictures you'll see some of the work that we accomplished today to welcome back the students. It makes me incredible proud be apart of a team that puts as much effort (if not more) into making a welcoming environment as it does into fighting for the rights of teachers everywhere. We are all excited to back in our classes with our students, and we're not afraid to show it.
Down to business. The big decision to be made now is what to do about the Fall One Act that I was planning on implementing this year. The strike fell right in the middle of auditions, so we would be two weeks behind. The way I see it, we could to try to push through and hold auditions next week, or come up with an alternative performance outlet. I'll be polling students tomorrow to see how they feel about all of this.
The room is set up and ready for the kids! I can't wait for Tuesday. I couldn't have done it without the help of my wonderful wife Jenny and good friend Ben.
In other news, the union has called for a strike on September 10th. While I side with the union in support of teacher's rights, I REALLY don't want to be out of the classroom. I can't think of a single teacher who does. To be fair, I'm surrounded by rockstars, so there's that. I sincerely hope the board and the union come to a fair agreement before the tenth. Also, I wanted to have auditions for Ravenswood's first fall play on the 11th and 12th. Not that it's all about me and my plans, but come on.
