It was a phenomenal first week of rehearsasl. I couldn't be happier with the cast's first reading of the script. It is a challenging piece and I love seeing the cast rise to meet it head on.
In brief, Señora Tortuga, is a heart warming play about the power of stories and the strength of family. However, it is a bilingual play with some phrases in Spanish. As some of the cast speaks no Spanish, I am incredibly proud of their bravery at tackling the new language. I am equally as proud of the Spanish speaking members stepping into a leadership role and helping out their fellow cast mates. I can't wait for the next rehearsal!

I for one can't wait to get back to class. We have so many amazing things to do this year, I can't wait to get the ball rolling. It has been a roller-coaster of a week with rallies and picketing and planning and waiting... Politics aside, we have a lot of work to do in Drama and I'm excited to be getting back to it. Quick note: I met some truly wonderful people on the picket line that are energized to make Ravenswood Elementary even better. Stay tuned for more news on brand new curtains for the stage, and a new playground design that could potentially include a small outdoor amphitheater. I have grand visions of performances of Greek plays in the future. In other news, it has been great working with all of the teachers through these troubling times. In the pictures you'll see some of the work that we accomplished today to welcome back the students. It makes me incredible proud be apart of a team that puts as much effort (if not more) into making a welcoming environment as it does into fighting for the rights of teachers everywhere. We are all excited to back in our classes with our students, and we're not afraid to show it. Down to business. The big decision to be made now is what to do about the Fall One Act that I was planning on implementing this year. The strike fell right in the middle of auditions, so we would be two weeks behind. The way I see it, we could to try to push through and hold auditions next week, or come up with an alternative performance outlet. I'll be polling students tomorrow to see how they feel about all of this. The room is set up and ready for the kids! I can't wait for Tuesday. I couldn't have done it without the help of my wonderful wife Jenny and good friend Ben.
In other news, the union has called for a strike on September 10th. While I side with the union in support of teacher's rights, I REALLY don't want to be out of the classroom. I can't think of a single teacher who does. To be fair, I'm surrounded by rockstars, so there's that. I sincerely hope the board and the union come to a fair agreement before the tenth. Also, I wanted to have auditions for Ravenswood's first fall play on the 11th and 12th. Not that it's all about me and my plans, but come on.
This year, Drama Class will be making a move to the 4th floor at Ravenswood Elementary. We will be sharing space with the library and computer lab. It has been a bit tricky trying to carve a space for drama, but I've had a lot of support from administration and it certainly helps that my wife is a scenic designer. Also, I certainly couldn't have moved all of those bookcases without the help of Ben Herman, who showed up early in the morning and loaned his brilliance in the face problem solving fun/madness. Lastly, I have to send a big thank you to the facilities staff for lugging all of the drama stuff up and down the stairs at least twice, by my count(might be more). They're phenomenal. All of this does a great deal to remind me of the amazing collaboration efforts that are inherent in Theatre. When we work together, there is no end to what we can accomplish. Thanks everyone. A 3D rendering of the above design. Teaching in the library will have a few challenges, but I am SUPER excited!. Computer lab on the right, Drama on the left. Let's create some art! Nothing says creativity like a blank slate. I can't wait to get the new room set up! The facilities team has been working long and hard all summer moving classroom materials to new rooms. A big applause to the school's crew for lugging all my books to the second floor of an un-airconditioned building during the summer heat, y'all are awesome.
